Alternatives to Coffee in the AM
Jan 08, 2016 09:51AM ● By News DeskIf kicking your coffee habit is a resolution of yours, you are not alone. Caffeine is considered to be the most commonly used psychoactive drug in the world — most commonly found in coffee, tea, soda and chocolate — with up to 90% of adult Americans consuming it daily. Though legal and socially acceptable, caffeine can have negative effects, such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, jitters and insomnia.
Although black coffee in moderation is said to have healthy effects, most people find themselves consuming more than the recommended amount. Often times, developing a coffee habit is a way of coping with stress and sleep deprivation. The convenience of coffee shops and delicious lattes packed with sugar and excess calories has increased people’s addiction and waistlines.
If you are ready to kick your habit or slow down, know that you may experience withdrawal symptoms for 1-3 days, such as headaches. With determination, you can get your caffeine addiction under control. Having healthy alternatives to coffee in the morning — when the urge for caffeine is typically strongest— will aid in keeping your resolution to quit.
Instead of Coffee Try:
Green Tea — Choose a tea that is decaffeinated. Containing antioxidants and antibacterial agents, green tea can help fight and prevent tooth decay, the flu and other viruses, depression, high blood pressure, wrinkles…and the list goes on. It also is known to increase metabolism, aiding in weight loss. Use local honey instead of sugar for additional health benefits.
Apples — Apples are known to have more “pick me up” than coffee with additional nutrients. You can either eat an apple in the morning for energy or juice them with carrots and ginger root. If you need a hot replacement drink, apple cider is another way to go, containing another health booster, cinnamon. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for even more benefits!
Hot Water with Lemon — Drinking warm water with lemon first thing in the morning will help get your body and mind going. It can also help regulate your digestive system, maintain a healthy weight, make your skin glow and boost your immune system.
Protein Shakes — If you were skipping breakfast and only drinking coffee, you may want to replace your morning cup of coffee with a protein shake packed with nutrients. This will not only replace your coffee, but also double as a meal. Visit your local health store for a product that’s right for you and mix with either water or almond milk.
