Sep 30, 2019 09:16AM ● By Staff Writer

Created in 1974 as an effort to keep Cajun culture alive, Festivals Acadiens et Créoles has evolved from a simple gathering of likeminded people to one of the premier cultural heritage festivals in North America.

This family-friendly* event includes a symposium, delicious food, arts & crafts, shopping, cooking demonstrations, the best live Cajun & Zydeco music, and lots of dancing.

All events are free (except Tour Des Atakapas), and open to the public. But consider supporting this non-profit event by becoming a Festival Friend; Levels start at just $30. Food, drinks, and gifts are available for a fee.

This year’s festival is Oct. 11-13 at Lafayette’s Girard Park and starts Friday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m. with the official Cutting of the Boudin and continues until 9 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

The symposium “Female Perspectives in Cajun and Creole Culture” starts Friday morning Oct. 11, at 9 AM – 4:30 PM at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum, 710 E. St. Mary Blvd. Seating is limited, so get there early. Lunch Tickets must be purchased in advance. For details visit:  www.festivalsacadiens.com/events.

Dance till your heart’s content, shop the Louisiana Craft Fair and purchase official festival merchandise, eat at the Bayou Food Festival where a variety of Cajun and Creole dishes will be available from dozens of local vendors, attend a cooking demonstration in the Culture Sur La Table tent, watch a football game in the Sports Tent, run or paddle the Tour Des Atakapas, or just sit back and enjoy the unique sights and sounds of Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.
